신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 확산 속에서 인공지능(AI)이 신약 개발의 비용과 시간을 획기적으로 줄일 수 있는 대안으로 떠오르며 새롭게 주목받고 있다.

루닛과 명지병원 등은 코로나19 진단에 AI를 활용하고 있다. 폐의 비정상 소견을 탐지하는 루닛의 AI 소프트웨어는 이미 경북 문경 서울대병원 인재원에 마련된 대구•경북 제3생활치료센터와 브라질 대형병원 등에서 코로나19 진단과 검진에 사용되고 있다.
Lunit, a Korean medical AI solution company, is applying its AI platform to the diagnosis of COVID-19 at Myongji Hospital. Lunit's AI software, which detects abnormalities in the lungs, is already being used for COVID-19 diagnosis and screening at Seoul National University Hospital’s treatment center in Daegu and a large hospital in Brazil.
AI가 환자의 흉부 엑스레이 영상을 분석해 우선 살펴봐야 하는 영상을 선별해주면 의사가 다시 판독•진단하는 식이다. 환자가 대규모로 쏟아지는 상황에서 진료 효율을 극대화하는 데 큰 도움이 되는 것으로 알려졌다.
When the AI system analyzes the patient's chest x-ray image and raises suspicion, the doctor thoroughly reads for final determination. This AI system can help maximize hospital efficiency especially when it is flooded with patients.
이 부회장은 "코로나19와 같은 긴급 상황에서는 시간을 줄이는 게 무엇보다 중요하므로 (AI 활용을) 시도해 볼 만한 가치가 있다"고 평했다.
In the current emergency, saving time is paramount, therefore it is worth trying AI, said Lee Seung-gyu, vice chairman of the Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization.
