Actor Kwak Do-won has returned to acting three years after suspending his career over a drunk-driving scandal, vowing to demonstrate accountability through his actions rather than words.

In a statement released on December 19, Kwak said it had taken him a long time to speak publicly. “I once again offer my deepest apologies to everyone who was hurt and disappointed by my wrongdoing,” he said.

Kwak acknowledged that he committed “a serious mistake” by driving under the influence in 2022, adding that he spent the years that followed questioning whether he was worthy of standing before the public again.

“I spent a long time reflecting on myself and thinking deeply about what kind of attitude I should have as a person before being an actor,” he said. “I came to realize belatedly that nothing I had taken for granted was ever truly guaranteed.”

He also apologized for not issuing a statement sooner. Kwak said that watching his previously released works and a recently aired drama gave him time for further reflection. “I sincerely regret that I was unable to apologize earlier and that I delayed clarifying my position,” he said.

Looking ahead, Kwak said he would not rush to seek forgiveness. “I will not ask for quick forgiveness,” he said. “I will prove, step by step, through actions rather than words, the sense of responsibility I failed to show before.”

Kwak was caught driving under the influence in Jeju Island on September 25, 2022, with a blood alcohol level of 0.158 percent. He later received a summary court order imposing a fine of 10 million won for violating the Road Traffic Act.

He officially resumed his acting career with the release of the Tving original series Villains, which premiered on December 18.
