South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean Co. announced on Friday that its newly developed Smart Hull Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) Tier 3 system has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The technology enables real-time monitoring of a ship’s hull condition, helping operators proactively plan maintenance strategies.

According to Hanwha Ocean, the system uses data analytics to assess structural integrity even in areas not equipped with sensors, allowing it to qualify for ABS’s highest technology classification, Tier 3.

The company aims to apply the technology to offshore plants by next year following pilot testing.

“Shipowners are increasingly including digital capabilities as contract requirements, and classification societies are updating their regulations accordingly,” said Sohn Young-chang, head of Hanwha Ocean’s Product Strategy and Technology Center. “With this concept approval, we plan to actively respond to the maritime industry’s growing demand for smart and digital technologies.”
