South Korea demonstrated rapid diplomatic coordination and military mobility during “Operation Desert Shine,” an evacuation mission that safely transported more than 200 citizens from the Middle East within a day.

At 5:59 p.m. on March 15, a Republic of Korea Air Force KC-330 “Cygnus” multi-role aerial refueling and transport aircraft landed at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. On board were 211 passengers, including 204 South Korean nationals who had been stranded amid intense fighting in the Middle East.

The evacuation operation highlighted how quickly the government can mobilize diplomatic and military resources to protect its citizens during a crisis.

One of the mission’s most notable achievements was the unprecedented speed of diplomatic coordination. Normally, obtaining permission for a military aircraft to pass through foreign airspace can take weeks or even months. In this case, South Korea secured approval from more than 10 countries along the flight route between Korea and Saudi Arabia in just 24 hours.

Officials said the swift approval was possible thanks to strong diplomatic trust built through high-level communication. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, expressing solidarity over damage to energy facilities while securing Saudi support for the safe evacuation of Korean nationals.

Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-baek also played a key role, having visited Saudi Arabia twice — including his first overseas trip after taking office — to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Behind the scenes, diplomatic and military officials worked around the clock to secure airspace clearance. Despite the six-hour time difference between Korea and the Middle East, staff at the foreign ministry, overseas missions and the defense ministry maintained a 24-hour communication network.

Working directly with officials in each country, they repeatedly sent and verified documents required for flight approvals in real time.

Saudi Arabia served as the hub for the operation, providing strong support for military transport flights within its airspace and assisting Korean nationals from Bahrain, Kuwait and Lebanon in traveling to Riyadh for evacuation.

Officials said the success of Operation Desert Shine demonstrated South Korea’s growing diplomatic credibility and its ability to act as a “global pivotal state.” The mission’s rapid coordination and the military’s efforts to transport citizens from a conflict zone delivered a powerful message: the state will always stand by its people.
