Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum is widely expected to enter the Daegu mayoral race, with an official announcement scheduled for March 30.

During a meeting in Seoul on March 26, Jung Chung-rae, leader of the Democratic Party, urged Kim to run in the June 3 local elections, calling him the party’s “best chance” to win in Daegu.

“I have earnestly asked multiple times, and now we can no longer delay,” Jung said, appealing to Kim to accept the challenge “for the greater cause” despite personal sacrifice.

Kim indicated that he may accept the request, saying, “It may be difficult to avoid this,” and acknowledged growing calls from party members and supporters in Daegu urging him to step forward.

He also shared his internal deliberations, noting concerns about whether he could regain the passion for politics after having stepped back, as well as the heavy responsibility that comes with public office.

“From last week, I have been wondering whether I can withstand the party’s request and what I can offer to the citizens of Daegu,” Kim said.

Political observers believe Kim has effectively made up his mind to run, with expectations rising within the Democratic Party that he will officially declare his candidacy.

A party official said the leadership’s direct involvement reflects the urgency of the situation, adding that it would be difficult for Kim to turn down such a strong appeal.
