Contents in over-the-top (OTT) media service providers in South Korea have turned more diverse and creative under ever-growing competition.
Wavve, a local video streaming platform run by SK Telecom together with three Korean terrestrial broadcasters, released making-of-the-film behind MBC TV drama “Extraordinary You” that recently ended. The OTT provider said the release of special video footages helped attract 10.7 times more visitors to its 5GX Media, where they are posted.
The company has recycled the making-of-the-film videos that usually used to gather dust in the storage in the past, said a media industry official. Local broadcasting network MBC plans to make most of Wavve and other video platforms to pitch their programs.

Global streaming giant Netflix has been expanding its influence in the Korean media market by expanding collaboration with local players. This year, it released four original series at local theaters this year, compared with just one last year.
The competition to draw customers will heat up as more join the market. Last month, wireless carrier KT Corp. said it will launch mobile OTT service Seezn. CJ ENM, the entertainment unit of CJ Group and general programming channel JTBC have teamed up to launch a joint OTT service.
