None of Iran’s actions have helped slow the spread of the disease. China has reportedly slowed the spread of the disease through quarantines, but that news is government-created.
In contrast, Israel, which is not yet suffering a large outbreak of the disease, has announced that it will have a vaccine developed in a matter of weeks. Israeli scientists, like ours, are not burdened by government control of their research and news blackouts.
Scientists in Israel and the United States reportedly have the ability to “print” viruses. They may also be able to “print” the coronavirus using massive computer power, 3-dimensional printers and some sort of organic material. By that means, it may be possible to develop a vaccine in far less time than by normal means.
President Trump has put Vice President Mike Pence in charge of a multi-agency task force that promises openness and a “whole of government” response to the disease. Mr. Pence announced that tests for coronavirus infection are already available for all Americans.
Some people returning from China have been quarantined here. Other measures should be imposed to restrict travel to nations where the disease has spread widely and quarantine people coming from them.
It is far too soon to predict whether our government’s response to the coronavirus will prevent a deadly epidemic in the United States. It’s a pretty safe bet that it will do far better than the despotisms of China and Iran.

이란이 보유한 수준의 보건체제는 완전히 압도당하고 있다. 지난주 이란 정부는 이번 질병의 퇴치를 위해서 “의료계 종사자” 30만 명을 배치했다고 말했다.
이란이 취한 조치의 어떤 것도 이 질병의 확산을 늦추는 데 도움이 되지 않았다. 중국은 격리를 통해서 질병의 확산을 늦춘 것으로 알려졌지만 그 뉴스는 정부가 만든 것이다.
그에 비해 아직 이 질병의 대규모 발생을 겪지 않은 이스라엘은 몇 주 내에 백신을 개발할 것이라고 발표했다. 미국과 마찬가지로 이스라엘 과학자들은 자기네 연구에 대한 정부의 통제와 뉴스 보도 금지의 부담을 지지 않는다.
이스라엘과 미국 과학자들은 각종 바이러스를 복제할 수 있는 능력을 갖춘 것으로 알려졌다. 과학자들은 또한 막강한 컴퓨터 성능과 3차원 프린터 및 몇 종류의 유기물질을 이용하여 코로나 19 바이러스를 “복제”할 수 있을지도 모른다. 그러한 수단들을 이용하여, 일반적인 수단을 이용하는 것보다 훨씬 짧은 시간에 백신을 개발하는 것이 가능할 수도 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 마이크 펜스 부통령을 여러 기관으로 구성된 전담기구의 책임자로 임명했다. 이 기구는 이번 질병과 관련하여 투명한 대처와 “정부의 총력” 대응을 공약한다. 펜스 부통령은 코로나19 감염 검사를 모든 미국인들이 받을 수 있도록 이미 조치했다고 발표했다.
중국에서 귀국한 사람들 가운데 일부는 국내에서 격리되고 있다. 이번 질병이 널리 확산된 국가들을 여행하는 것을 제한하고 그런 나라에서 들어오는 사람들을 격리하기 위해 다른 여러 가지 조치를 취할 필요가 있다.
코로나19에 대한 우리 정부의 대응이 국내의 치명적인 전염을 막을 것인지 여부를 예측하기에는 때가 너무 이르다. 미국 정부가 폭정을 일삼는 중국과 이란의 정권보다 훨씬 더 잘 할 것이라고 장담해도 무방하다.
