The obvious point is that the People’s Republic of China is a totalitarian state, and when the power of a totalitarian state is threatened, it responds with force.
The Communist Party, which is the real government in China, cannot tolerate press freedom, as Americans understand it, or journalists interested in reporting the facts. The facts in China aren’t flattering to its government so the journalists have to go.
The only other observation to be made is that China, in its customary fashion, is lying not just about the origins of COVID-19 (which it blames on American servicemen traveling in Asia) but about the cause of this escalating standoff as well.
It began, in fact, six weeks ago with an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal about COVID-19 which referred, in its headline, to the People’s Republic as “the Real Sick Man of Asia.” This prompted Beijing to immediately expel three Journal reporters and demand a retraction and apology.
To their credit, neither the Journal nor the Trump administration were prepared to appease China by restricting press freedom in America.
The Chinese foreign ministry has not only propagated the false claim that COVID-19 originated in the United States but has also complained that employees of Chinese media suffer “unreasonable oppression” in the United States.
Of course, the only oppression suffered by Chinese journalists here is official American recognition that they are employed by the Chinese government - and ultimately controlled by China’s Communist Party.
The “oppression” is entirely self-inflicted. China has much to conceal, and its government is fully prepared to hide it.
중국은 숨길 것이 많다
명백한 사실을 제외하고는 최근 중국이 미국 언론인들을 추방한 조치에 관해 언급할 것이 많지 않다.
분명한 요점은 중화인민공화국이 독재적인 국가이며 독재 국가의 권력이 위협받으면 독재 국가는 힘으로 대응한다는 것이다.
중국에서 실제 정부인 공산당은 미국인들이 이해하는 바와 같은 언론 자유나 혹은 사실 보도에 관심을 가진 언론인들을 참을 수가 없다. 중국 내에서 사실이 정부의 비위에 맞지 않으면 언론인들도 떠나야 한다.
중국이 전통적인 방식에 따라서, 단지 코로나19의 기원에 관해서만 거짓말을 하고 있는 것이 아니라 지금 도를 더하고 있는 미·중 냉각 상태의 원인에 관해서도 거짓말을 하고 있다는 것이 또 다른 유일한 견해다. 중국은 아시아를 여행한 미국 군인에게 코로나19 발생의 원인을 돌리고 있다.
제목에서 중화인민공화국을 “아시아의 진정한 병자”라고 6주 전 언급한 월스트리트저널의 코로나19 관련 논평 기사가 게재되었을 때 이번 냉각 상태가 시작된 것이 사실이다. 이 보도는 베이징의 월스트리트저널 기자 3명의 즉각 추방과 기사 취소 및 사과 요구를 촉발했다.
월스트리트저널이나 트럼프 행정부가 미국 내의 언론 자유 제한을 통해 중국의 비위를 맞출 용의를 보이지 않은 것은 잘한 일이다.
중국 외교부는 코로나19가 미국에서 발원했다는 허위 주장을 유포했을 뿐만 아니라 중국 언론매체의 종사자들이 “비합리적인 억압”에 시달리고 있다는 항의 또한 제기했다.
물론 중국 언론인들이 미국에서 받는 유일한 억압은, 그들이 중국 정부에 고용되어 있고 궁극적으로는 중국 공산당의 통제를 받고 있다는 미국의 공식적 인식이다.
이 “억압”은 완전히 자초한 것이다. 중국은 감출 것이 많으며 중국 정부는 전적으로 그것을 감출 용의가 있다.
