SEOUL -- LG Uplus (LGU+), a mobile carrier in South Korea, joined hands with Unmanned Solution, a domestic company which provides self-driving solutions, to develop 5G-based outdoor self-driving service robots that can be used for various purposes from factory patrol to logistics and quarantine.

LGU+ said it has signed a memorandum of understanding to use video analysis solutions and other technologies for Unmanned Solution's self-driving logistics robots. The immediate goal is to commercialize factory patrol robots equipped with thermal imaging cameras and harmful gas detection IoT sensors next year. If an abnormal situation occurs, the integrated control center can receive real-time videos.

"5G is essential when operating self-driving robots that move outside areas such as factories," LGU+'s convergence business head Seo Jae-yong said. "Based on 5G communication, we will introduce various self-driving robots by combining our industrial solutions such as image analysis and IoT with robots."

LGU+ said that real-time kinematic (RTK) technology and 5G communication would be combined with self-driving robots. RTK positioning is a satellite navigation technique used to enhance the precision of position data derived from satellite-based positioning systems. It has applications in land surveys, hydrographic surveys and unmanned aerial vehicle navigation.

"We will do our best to commercialize outdoor self-driving service robots that can be used for multiple purposes," said Unmanned Solution CEO Moon Hee-chang. The two companies would commercialize logistics robots capable of carrying up to 150 kilograms of cargo at a maximum speed of 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) per hour.
