Kolon Industries announced Wednesday its new PET tire cord plant in Vietnam is ready for operation. The Korean textile giant’s new plant will manufacture 19,200 tons of PET tire cords, the reinforcement used to maintain the shape of a tire, annually. With the new plant, Kolon Industries is now capable of annually producing 103,200 tons of tire cords, which is tantamount to 15% of the global market. Demand for tire cords is soaring thanks to growing popularity of electric cars whose tire uses 10~20% more tire cords than gasoline cars due to heavy batteries.
