South Korea’s leading shipping company HMM has announced the introduction of the country’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ships, marking a major step toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. The initiative is part of the company’s broader plan to invest 14.4 trillion won in eco-friendly vessels over the coming decades.
HMM held a naming ceremony for two 7,700-TEU-class LNG-powered ships, the “HMM Ocean” and the “HMM Sky,” at the HJ Shipbuilding & Construction yard in Yeongdo, Busan, on Thursday. The event was attended by over 100 guests, including Angeliki Frangou, chairperson of Navios Maritime, which owns the ships, and Kim Kyung-bae, CEO of HMM, the charterer. Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, also attended the event.
