The Gangneung-Samcheok high-speed rail project has officially cleared the national preliminary feasibility study, securing its status as a major state-led infrastructure initiative.
Once completed, the travel time between Gangneung and Busan will be significantly reduced from the current 5 hours to approximately 3.5 hours.
This project aims to upgrade the only remaining low-speed section of the 480km East Coast Line, establishing a high-speed rail network that connects the Yeongnam and Gangwon regions.
The new rail link is expected to provide a strategic foundation for the regional Hydrogen Industry Belt and revitalize international tourism across 117 beaches along the coast.
With a focus on underground routing to minimize urban disruption, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is set to enhance its global connectivity and regional accessibility.
