효성은 오는 2028년까지 탄소섬유 산업에 총 1조원을 투자해 현재 연간 2000t을 생산할 수 있는 설비를 2만 4000t 규모로 증설하기로 했다. 정부도 미래 신산업의 근간이 될 첨단소재 육성에 과감한 지원을 약속했다.

South Korea’s Hyosung Group pledged 1 trillion won ($828 million) over the next decade to expand its carbon fiber capacity to 24,000 tons a year from current 2,000 tons as the government vowed full support in grooming the material pivotal to future industries.

전주 효성첨단소재 탄소섬유 공장의 1개 생산 라인을 10개까지 확대하는 계획으로, 증설을 마치면 효성의 세계 시장 점유율은 현재 2%(11위) 수준에서 10%(3위)까지 높아질 것으로 예상된다.

Hyosung said it will add nine additional carbon fiber production lines at its current plant in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province by investing 1 trillion won until 2028, an upgrade that would make it the world's third largest carbon fiber producer responsible for a 10 percent market share in 2028. The company currently ranks 11th with a 2 percent market share.

탄소섬유는 철에 비해 무게는 4분의 1에 불과하지만 10배의 강도와 7배의 탄성을 가진 소재다.

Carbon fiber is about one-fourth the weight of steel but is 10 times stronger and seven times more elastic.

조현준 효성 회장은 산업통상자원부우와 관련기업들이 참석한 '얼라이언스 MOU 협약식’에서 "탄소섬유의 미래 가치에 주목해 독자 기술 개발에 뛰어들었다"며 탄소섬유 후방산업의 가능성이 무궁무진하다고 말했다.

Carbon fiber has immeasurable growth potential with significant downstream effects on other industries, Hyosung chairman Cho Hyun-joon said during a memorandum of understanding with Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and partner companies.

한편 문재인 대통령은 이날 탄소섬유 신규 투자 협약식에 참석하고, 효성첨단소재 전주공장을 방문했다. 일본과의 무역 갈등이 계속되는 가운데 부품, 소재의 대일(對日) 의존도를 낮출 필요성을 강조하는 현장 행보다.

문 대통령은 "탄소섬유 등 소재 산업의 핵심 전략품목에 과감한 지원을 하겠다"며 "탄소섬유 등 100대 핵심 전략품목을 선정하여 향후 7년간 7~8조 원 이상의 대규모 예산을 투자할 것"이라고 밝혔다. 또 그는 효성 전주공장을 방문해 "탄소섬유는 미래 신산업의 뿌리에 해당하는 핵심 첨단소재"라며 "아무도 흔들 수 없는 나라, 책임 있는 경제강국이 되기 위해서는 핵심소재의 특정국가 의존도를 줄여야 한다"고 강조했다.

The president promised bold support for innovation in the high-tech component manufacturing sector by selecting 100 target items for growth, including carbon fiber, and investing 7 to 8 trillion won over the next seven years. He added that Korea would need to “lessen its dependence on core materials from specific countries to become an unshakable economic powerhouse.”
