Google-owned YouTube, the world's largest video platform, has so far this year received more than 130,000 requests for correction of copyright violation from South Korean TV networks, according to data on Monday.

The data obtained by lawmaker Roh Woong-rae, chairman of the National Assembly’s Science, Technology, Information and Telecommunication, from Korea Communications Commission showed that the number of such requests made by four terrestrial broadcasters (KBS, MBC, SBS and EBS) and four general programming cable channels (JTBC, TV Chosun, Channel A and MBN) sent to YouTube and other video platform operators as of August amounted to 153,081 cases.

Other video platforms include Naver, Daum, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Dailymotion and Youku Tudou. YouTube received 135,712 cases, accounting for nearly 90 percent of the total. Facebook took 7.5 percent with 11,497 such requests, showing a double increase from 5,122 cases a year ago, and a 10-fold jump from 1,146 cases in 2017. The figure for China’s Youku Tudou and France’s Dailymotion came to 2,359 cases (1.5 percent) and 1,861 cases (1.2 percent), respectively.

Naver received 1,324 requests (0.9 percent), with Kakao 4 and AfreecaTV zero. Naver and Daum, the two largest Korean portals have intensified monitoring activities since 2015, leading to a decline in correction requestions.

The dominant presence of YouTube and other foreign platform operators in copyright violation may fuel demand for Korean authorities to take action.

Rep. Roh argued copyright violation is rampant on YouTube and this poses a threat to the local broadcasting industry ecosystem. He vowed to raise the issue during parliamentary inspection to urge the government to provide countermeasures.
