South Korea’s LG Display Co. organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels went onboard Boeing’s next-generation aircraft, expanding its flexible panel beyond automotive.

According to industry sources on Wednesday, LG Display’s large-size OLED panels have been decorated on the ceiling of Boeing’s 777-200 ecoDemonstrator aircraft. Earlier this month, Boeing showed off OLED displays on its new aircraft for “a better flying experience, both outside and inside the airplane.”

Industry watchers also believe the two companies are currently in talks to design a smart aircraft cabin with OLED screens and other latest technologies like 5G network.

LG Display will be adding another revenue source by winning aviation makers at a time its traditional panel business has been rapidly chased by Chinese competition.

Experts anticipate rapid growth in demand for OLED screens from the aviation industry, given that OLED technology enables the production of transparent, bendable or even rollable displays. Also, OLED is lighter in weight than liquid crystal displays, which is a great advantage for aircraft, helping a plane to maximize fuel efficiency and consuming comparably low electricity.

Along with the aviation display, the automotive display is another key market in the mobility panel industry.

LG Display currently supplies its OLED automotive screens to the world’s major finished car brands including Mercedes-Benz and General Motors that are reportedly upgrading dashboard displays. According to industry tracker IHS Markit, global automotive OLED display shipments are forecast to jump to 4.3 million units by 2025 from 240,000 units in 2020.
