삼성전자와 현대자동차가 사내 스타트업 지원 프로그램을 통해 스타트업 사관학교로 거듭나고 있다.

South Korea’s two biggest companies gave birth to innovative startups through in-house incubations.

현대자동차그룹이 임직원의 혁신 아이템을 사업화한 사내 스타트업 4곳을 독립 기업으로 이달 새롭게 분사시켰다고 18일 밝혔다. 이번에 분사시킨 4개 업체는 각기 2~4년의 육성•준비 기간을 거쳤다.

Hyundai Motor Group announced Monday it has spun off four startup offspring from its discovery and incubation program H-Startup after two to four years of grooming.

현대차그룹이 이번에 분사시킨 '마이셀' 'PM SOL' '원더무브' '엘앰캐드' 등은 유망 사내 스타트업으로, 버섯 균사 기반 바이오, 복합 윤활제, 커뮤니티 모빌리티 서비스, 3차원(3D) 도면 정보 솔루션 같은 기술을 보유하고 있다.

The four startup beneficiaries are Mycel (fungi-base new materials that can replace leather and film for vehicles), PM SOL (3D printing metal powders and lubricants), Wonder Move (employees carpooling platform) and Elmcad (3D automobile design solutions).

현대차그룹은 미래 모빌리티 혁신 기술을 확보한다는 목표 아래 2000년 사내 스타트업 육성 프로그램인 '벤처플라자'를 출범했다. 현재 H스타트업으로 거듭난 이 프로그램은 현재까지 유망 사내 스타트업 53개를 선발•육성했고, 이 중 성과가 좋은 업체 16개를 분사시켰다.

The auto conglomerate launched the in-house startup incubation program, formerly Venture Plaza, to secure innovative technologies for future mobility in 2000. A total of 53 in-house units have benefitted from the program, of which 16 has been spun off into separate entities from the group.

같은 날, 삼성전자 역시 C랩 인사이드를 통해 육성한 우수 사내 스타트업 5곳의 창업을 지원한다고 밝혔다. 이번에 독립하는 사내 스타트업은 블록버스터 하일러 학스비 써니파이브 루트센서 등 5개다. 블록버스터는 초보자도 손쉽게 컴퓨터그래픽 영상 콘텐츠를 제작할 수 있는 모바일 애플리케이션을 선보였다. 하일러는 종이 위 글자를 디지털로 관리해주는 스마트 형광펜, 학스비는 자동으로 오답노트를 생성해주는 인공지능(AI) 학습노트 서비스, 써니파이브는 자연광과 유사한 '풀스펙트럼' 빛을 사용해 인공 햇빛을 생성하는 창문형 조명, 루트센서는 어느 각도에서나 자외선을 측정할 수 있는 센서를 개발했다.

On the same day, Samsung Electronics Co. also separated five in-house startups incubated through C-Lab. Its children are Blockbuster (3D computer graphics-based mobile video editing application), Hyler (smart highlighter for digitalization of analog text), Haxby (AI-based smart study note service for learners), SunnyFive (window-shaped lighting device for artificial sunlight), and RootSensor (new type of sensor to record daily UV exposure).

C랩 인사이드는 삼성전자가 2012년 도입한 사내 스타트업 육성 프로그램으로 2015년부터는 스핀오프 제도를 통해 독립을 지원하고 있다. 삼성전자 C랩 스핀오프 제도는 임직원들에게 초기 사업자금과 창업자금을 지원하고 희망 시 5년 안에 재입사 기회를 부여하는 제도다. 이 제도가 시행된 후 163명의 임직원이 45개 스타트업을 설립했다. 독립 후 유치한 투자금은 총 550억원에 달한다.

The Korean tech giant launched the startup and venture incubation program C-Lab in 2012 to discover innovative ideas, and a total of 163 employees have set up 45 startups and attracted a combined 55 billion won ($44.9 million) investments so far.

한인국 삼성전자 창의개발센터 상무는 "지속적인 스타트업 육성을 통해 스타트업과 삼성전자가 윈윈할 수 있는 협력 생태계 구축에 기여할 것"이라고 말했다.

“Going forward, we will continue working to unlock Samsung employees’ potential for creative innovation while encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit,” said Hahn In-kuk, vice president and head of the Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Electronics.
