Koreans can download a full 2-hour length HD movie in just 6 seconds on their smartphones by leveraging on both 4G and 5G stations under a pioneering dual connectivity solution from Samsung Electronics.

On Thursday Samsung Electronics demonstrated data speed in 5.23 gigabits per second (Gbps) on a single device at its lab in Suwon by combining 40MHz of 4G frequency and 800MHz of 5G frequency in mmWave.

Samsung used E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC), which enables mobile operators to power up 5G speeds, coverage and reliability by leveraging a 4G network.

The latest achievement outscores its 4.25-Gbps speeds recorded in last year’s test using MU-MIMO (multi-user multiple-input multiple-output) technology.

Samsung has been forging ahead with 5G research and strongly committed to enhancing network experiences for every user. In a 2018 demo, Samsung premiered its first 5G-4G dual connectivity technology, reaching data speeds of more than 1.7Gbps. It has since been breaking its own records, achieving data speeds of 2.65 Gbps in 2019 and 4.25 Gbps speeds in 2020.

With the EN-DC technology, Samsung will be able to take wireless communications to new heights. By installing 5G ultra-high frequency band base stations, local mobile carriers can deliver the full value of 5G by providing faster and more stable data communications services for users even in the most densely-populated areas.

Shares of Samsung Electronics finished 0.36 percent lower at 82,100 won on Friday.
