South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. will continue to introduce novel and innovative features in its flagship Galaxy devices moving forward, according to its president and head of mobile eXperience (MX) division.
“As we pioneer groundbreaking experiences in mobile artificial intelligence (AI), we gave a lot of thought to how this new and exciting technology can enhance our lives and inspire society’s next steps,” Roh Tae-moon, president and head of MX business at Samsung Electronics, said in an editorial posted on the company’s newsroom. “Applied with care and consideration, Galaxy AI helps people communicate beyond borders, complete everyday tasks easily and so much more.”
The editorial, published on Wednesday, mapped out the current and future vision for mobile AI, following the release of the Galaxy S24 series in January 2024.
“When integrated into phones, AI is, to put it simply, a revolution,” Roh said. “… Mobile devices will become the primary access point for AI, and Samsung Galaxy – with our broad and comprehensive product portfolio, heritage of innovation and philosophy of open collaboration – is in a great position to accelerate its global expansion.”
Samsung Electronics will also strengthen the mobile AI ecosystem, which started with smartphones. It plans to expand the Galaxy AI, currently only embedded into the Galaxy S24 series, beyond smartphones to various product categories such as Galaxy Watch, according to Roh.
“Select Galaxy wearables will use AI to enhance digital health and unlock a whole new era of expanded, intelligent health experiences in the near future,” he said. “Samsung will keep enriching and expanding Galaxy AI experiences across categories by collaborating with more industry-leading AI partners.”
Roh mentioned Circle to Search, where users draw a circle to search for an object, alongside real-time interpretation and chat assistance as the most widely used Galaxy AI features. The Photo Assist feature, which erases specific objects in photos and fills the space, is another widely used feature.
Roh also shared the company’s thoughts on AI safety.
“Of course, there are challenges and responsibilities to consider,” Roh said. “AI models in training are still susceptible to hallucinations, and the debate on intellectual property rights continues. It is crucial that companies openly collaborate to carefully define AI experiences, so users can confidently and reliably enjoy these new capabilities.”
In the meantime, Samsung Electronics is expected to focus on showcasing Galaxy AI to the world at the Mobile World Congress 2024, the world’s largest mobile communication exhibition that opens in Barcelona, Spain, on February 26th, 2024.
