SEOUL, December 15 (AJP) - Russian Ambassador to Seoul Georgy Zinoviev said after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached on Saturday that the current political turmoil in South Korea could "rather contribute" to the relationship between the two countries.

Following the impeachment, the Russian Embassy in Seoul shared the ambassador's message on its Facebook page. “I hope that the dramatic events in Korean domestic politics will ultimately not interfere with this possibility of recovery, but rather contribute to it,” Zinoviev said.

Zinoviev mentioned the recent relationship between South Korea and Russia, saying, “Speaking of our bilateral relations, lately we have unfortunately been watching bilateral relations deteriorate significantly.”

“The bilateral relations can be said to have reached the point of no return, and that point will be the decision to directly supply lethal weapons to the Kiev regime,” he expressed his opinion on the South Korean government's recent decision. “Fortunately, Korea has not crossed this "red line", which has left a possibility for stabilizing relations and recovery in the future,” he added.

His comments reflect recent tensions between the two countries after the South Korean government said it would consider gradually supplying weapons to Ukraine. This came in response to a military pact between Russia and North Korea, which reportedly includes North Korean forces being sent to the Ukrainian battlefield.
