SEOUL, December 31 (AJP) - An event showcasing excerpts from a Spanish folk opera was held in Seoul last week, ahead of its first-ever performance here.

Co-hosted by the Embassy of Spain in Seoul and the Korea Opera Coaches Association (KOCA), the event, held at COEX in southern Seoul on Sunday, was part of a fundraising effort for the production of the Spanish folk opera "Zarzuela," as well as to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Spain.

The exact release date of the opera here has not been decided yet.

Zarzuela is a traditional Spanish art form that combines songs with recitations, reflecting the European country's folkloric essence.

"No puede ser," a main song from Zarzuela "Tabernera del Puerto" was performed, mesmerizing participants of the event, which included legendary tenor Plácido Domingo, Spanish Ambassador to Korea Guillermo Kirkpatrick, Roger Royo, chairman of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Korea, and Unai Urrecho, a conductor at the University of Suwon.

KOCA's president Jun Ji-sung, former South Korean Ambassador to Spain Bahk Sahng-hoon, and president of the Korean Council on Latin America and the Caribbean (KCLAC) Han Byung-kil welcomed many guests who graced the event.

The event brought together over 70 luminaries from various fields.
