An advanced communication technology jointly developed by South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. and Samsung Electronics Co. will be installed in Hyundai Motor’s smart factory.

According to Hyundai Motor on Wednesday, it has successfully completed the demonstration of 5G Private Network RedCap technology that began in January with Samsung Electronics.

Hyundai Motor and Samsung Electronics plan to unveil this technology at the Mobile World Congress 2025 Barcelona, the world’s largest IT and electronics exhibition, held from March 3 to 6.

5G private network technology is a dedicated communication system that enables industries to use separate base stations and frequency bands for communication within specific areas, such as factories.

Since it operates independently from external internet and mobile users, it experiences minimal interference, ensuring stable and high-speed data transmission without disruptions or delays.

This makes it a key technology in smart manufacturing, as it allows seamless control of multiple industrial robots and wireless equipment in factories.

Setting up a 5G private network, however, requires advanced technology and consumes relatively high power.

The 5G private network RedCap technology demonstrated by Hyundai Motor and Samsung Electronics simplifies device configurations and miniaturizes related equipment.

The companies also have successfully reduced the frequency bandwidth to suit the manufacturing environment.

It offers significantly faster communication speeds and higher data processing capacity than traditional Wi-Fi used in factories, while ensuring stable connectivity.

Hyundai Motor is expected to expand 5G private network applications beyond automated logistics robots to include vehicle inspection equipment, small wireless tools, cameras, and tablets.

“We are currently applying 5G private network technology to the assembly line at Ulsan Plant 3 and Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia, the United States,” said an official from Hyundai Motor. “The newly developed 5G RedCap technology will be deployed in key domestic and international factories, starting with Hyundai’s dedicated EV plant in Ulsan, once mass production readiness is secured.”
