Song Soo Ryuns compositions appear through erasure, paradoxically rather than through drawing. Her designs come into existence through the creation of zones of removed pigment. Avoiding subjects or motifs, Song instead studies how the artists physical contact with a surface leaves traces of itself, as positive drawn elements are expunged. This becomes a metaphor for disappearance from being.

Mrs. Songs work begins as a contemplative exercise. Her choice of pigments and their properties is keenly considered as primary to her artistic statement. It is these properties that Song exposes by erasure, the removal of surface leaving only the ultimate essence of what remains after her work is complete. Her consistent meditative method over the last forty years has allowed the fulillment of her wish to approach abstract qualities of nature beyond the limitations of material reality.

Song describes that her vision is rooted in nature, though the nature of which she speaks relates to a cosmic order of time and space rather than the physical world around us.

Each drawing contains a strong spatial sense, with the paper as background to dense application of pigment. Progress of pigment application is evident, as are scratches and marks that wend their way across the surface, along with staccato erasure points, slender marks like the stalks of plants, and dots like spring flower buds or the trail of a shooting star.

Perhaps these are the lingering signs of nature of which the artist speaks, which shake off their effulgence to leave only their essential presence. Or perhaps they are ancient memories of the collective unconscious recognizing the vestiges of life past.
